The region of Umbria lies at Italy’s centre and is known for its hills, and picturesque countryside dotted with small villages such as Orvieto, Todi, medieval Gubbio, and Spoleto. Often overlooked for neighbouring Tuscany, Umbria has avoided much of the mass tourism and maintained a certain sense of authenticity. The main city of the region is Perugia perched high on a hill with panoramic views of the surrounding green valleys. The city is known for hosting one of Europe’s most important annual jazz music festivals.
Many make the pilgrimage to the region for the sole purpose of visiting the town of Assisi, the home of Saint Francis and his name sake church.
As far as Umbrian cuisine goes, truffles grow in the fertile earth of this region and meat is the focus of main dishes such as porchetta and game meats. Perugia is also known for chocolate and the production of Perugina’s Bacis.
